UBCM 2011: Tell your Municipal Councillors to stand up for Medicare at this year's Union of BC Municipalities meeting!

Municipal governments from around the province will gather from September 26 to 30 at the UBCM Annual General Meeting in order to address common issues and share concerns with the provincial government.
This year the City of Victoria is bringing forward a resolution (B159) calling on the province to stop the expansion of for-profit surgical and diagnostic clinics. This year is the second time the resolution will be on the General Meeting agenda.
Municipal governments can play an important role in protecting public health services in our communities. Support for this resolution is just one of the ways that municipal officials can take a stand to protect and improve our public health care system and promote the development of public, not-for-profit health care facilities.
TAKE ACTION! Click here to e-mail your Municipal Council and ask that it support the pro-public health care resolution. If this resolution passes, it will send an important signal to the provincial government and the private, for-profit clinic owners setting up shop in B.C.

"Health Care Drinks" on tap
No, it's not a new kind of healthy juice - it's a new opportunity to meet people just like you - people who care about protecting our public health care system in B.C.
"Health Care Drinks" is a BC Health Coalition initiative to bring people together for new connections, learning, and some fun! It's a chance for health care professionals, students, activists and policy wonks to gather over a pint and chat about mutual interests, campaign ideas, job and volunteer opportunities, or anything else that comes out of the spicy stew created when you mix creative, intelligent and committed people with a little music and some cool networking space.
This edition of Health Care Drinks will be held in Vancouver. The BCHC is encouraging those interested in organizing similar events in their communities to get in touch and we can help you get your own events off the ground.
If you are interested in attending Health Care Drinks Vancouver, or would like to involve you or your organization in helping to organize this ongoing event - please contact Darlene Gage at darlene@bchealthcoalition.ca

Donor Profile: Bob Allison
Bob Allison is an 80-year-old retired pastor living in North Vancouver. Bob became a major donor for the Health Coalition recently, because he is feeling increasingly concerned about the slow erosion to our public health care system.
Bob has been on the receiving end of some pretty major health services and treatments over the years, and says that he can't imagine having to pay for those services out of his own pocket.
"I have two new knees and now walk without pain, I've had a hernia repaired, open heart surgery and a new coronary valve inserted, along with a stent. Today I feel pretty well and want to share my appreciation with others."
"It seems like our Canadian system is being slowly chipped away at, and the government is trying to privatize certain parts of it. I don't think that is at all fair, because then only people with money will be able to access good care."
