Voters call on municipal candidates to take Public Health Care Champion pledge
Municipal elections are less than a month away and the BCHC is working to help keep public health care a top-of-mind issue for candidates.
We need your help to ask municipal candidates around the province to pledge their support for public health care and work to promote the health and well being of their communities.
What's health care got to do with municipal politics?
As stewards of our communities, municipal leaders can demand adequate funding for our public health care system and speak out against privatized, for-profit health care.
The state of health care, the future of Medicare, the upcoming renewal of the Federal-Provincial Health Accord and the resulting effects on municipal social and economic infrastructure are all important issues for municipalities.
The BCHC has developed a great on-line tool that allows voters to quickly send personalized e-mails to local candidates of their choosing telling them how much they value public health care and asking them to show their support by taking our Public Health Care Champion pledge on-line.
We will circulate our list of Public Health Care Champions to our supporters, the public, and media throughout B.C. prior to the November 19 election - and will tell voters which candidates in their communities are ready to stand up for Medicare.
TAKE ACTION! Click here to e-mail your municipal candidates today and send a personalized message calling on them to take the Public Health Care Champion Pledge!

Questions about Medical Services Commission's ability to protect patients from unlawful user charges continue
In the past weeks, nearly 1,000 British Columbians have contacted Health Minister de Jong to call for an inquiry into the Medical Services Commission's (MSC) ability to ensure that all patients get fair and equitable access to physician services.
We're working hard to keep the pressure on our provincial government to enforce the health care laws that ensure everyone can access the care they need. Public outcry has mounted since this spring's discovery that the provincial authority did not perform a test of access during its 2007 audit of Vancouver's Copeman Healthcare Centre. Information obtained by the BCHC through Freedom Of Information requests shows that MSC auditors failed to verify Copeman's claims that there was no preferential treatment at its member-only primary care clinic.
Members of the public continue to be denied insured medical services for choosing not to pay, or being unable to pay, the Copeman Centre's annual or other fees.

Health Accords: securing a bright future for Medicare
The provinces and territories are gearing up for negotiations to renew the Health Accord in 2014. The Health Accord is the agreement that sets out the national plan for our health care system, and the youth of today will be impacted by the decisions made during these negotiations. That's why the BCHC is working to send several young leaders to Ottawa this November to lobby the federal government on the renewal.
So far, the signals from Ottawa on Health Accord renewal are not good. Ottawa seems to be listening to the lobbyists of for-profit, private health care. Now is the time to all make our voices heard loud and clear that Canadians treasure our universal, public health care system and want to see it expanded, not reduced.
We are asking BCHC supporters to help us to make sure that young people have a strong voice at the table and have an opportunity to determine the future of our health care system.
Health Coalition youth members travel the province talking with thousands of young people about the health care system through our youth campaign. These young leaders have a lot to say about the future of health care, and they need to have a strong voice representing youth across B.C.care."
A conference is taking place in November with Roy Romanow and others, and it is an excellent opportunity for B.C. to be at the table and talk directly to government officials.
Together with young leaders from B.C., we can bring the voice of all Canadians directly to Ottawa.
