| Medicare: It's got us covered |
The BC Health Coalition is taking the fight for public health care all the way to B.C.'s Supreme Court.
Earlier this year, private clinic operators launched a legal challenge to the laws that protect public health insurance and British Columbians' equal access to health care. "Medicare: It's got us covered" will mobilize public pressure ensure B.C.'s provincial government mounts a vigorous defense of the universal public health insurance that we all rely on.
The BC Health Coalition, Canadian Doctors for Medicare and others have also applied to participate in the private insurance legal case through 'party status.'
"This lawsuit forces the government to defend public health insurance in the courts, even as these same private clinics have benefited from lax provincial health care policy," explains BCHC Co-chair Alice Edge.
"That's why the BC Health Coalition, Canadian Doctors for Medicare and others are at the table to ensure the public's interest is well represented in this unprecedented legal challenge."
"Minister Falcon must take a leadership role in protecting British Columbians from private investors and insurance companies who are charging illegal user fees and billing patients for health services already covered by Medicare," says Edge.
This legal attack on public health insurance is seen as part of the private medical industry's attempt to for allow American-style health insurance in to Canada.
Donate today to the "It's Got us Covered" campaign. Tell Health Services Minister Kevin Falcon to protect British Columbians' public health care from the private clinics' legal challenge and the U.S. health insurance industry.

| Free public events! Paying more and getting less: the private clinics' threat to Medicare |
Don't miss two free upcoming public events being organized by the Health Coalition. They will offer a rare opportunity to hear directly about the fight for public health care south of the border and about the private insurance industry's threat here in Canada.
Guest speakers include representatives from the US-based Physicians for a National Health Program, Canadian Doctors for Medicare, and the Canadian Health Coalition.
Speakers will share information about the heated health care debate in the U.S. and the implications of the constitutional challenge launched by a group of private clinics in B.C. that could open our doors to US-style private insurance companies and dramatically change public health care for all of us.

| Action alert! Tell your Municipal Councillors to support the public health care resolution at this year's Union of BC Municipalities meeting! |
| |
From Sept. 28 to Oct. 1 Municipal governments from around the province gather to address common issues and advance shared concerns to the provincial government at their Annual General Meeting.
The cities of Victoria and New Westminster have brought forward a resolution (B147) that calls on the province to stop the expansion of for-profit surgical and MRI/CT clinics.
Municipal governments can play an important role in protecting public health services in their communities. Support for this resolution is just one of the ways that municipal officials can take a stand to protect and improve our public health care system and promote the development of a public, not-for-profit health care facilities.
The BC Health Coalition is calling on the provincial government to take a strong stand in defending provincial health legislation in the face of this legal challenge.
Click here to e-mail your Municipal Council and ask that it support the pro-public healthcare resolution If this resolution passes, it will send an important signal to the provincial government and the private, for-profit clinic owners who are setting up shop in B.C.

Stand on Guard for Medicare! Canadian Health Coalition calls for leadership from Harper |
| |
|
Tired or angered by the dishonest representations of our public health care system made during the last several months by various groups and individuals in the United States?
Health professionals have raised their voices. Individual Canadians have written to President Obama, made videos and given speeches to tell our neighbours to the
south the truth about Canada's universal public health care.
But there has not been one word from our Prime Minister in defense of Canada's cherished public health care system. Even as he met with President Obama and the media raised the issue, he implied there was no federal role in overseeing our national health care system.
As Canadians, we expect our Prime Minister to speak up to defend our health care system from misrepresentation and to enforce the Canada Health Act. We expect our Prime Minister to stand on guard for Medicare.
Click here to take action and tell the Prime Minister to stand on guard for Medicare!
