| National Medicare Week Rally at the BC Legislature November 18th!
|
Public health care activists from across Vancouver Island will converge on the lawn of the Legislature in Victoria on November 18 to demand that the BC Government stop breaking its promises to protect public health care. The recent wave of cuts to programs and services, delays in funding to develop necessary care facilities, growing privatization, and increased rates for seniors' facilities must stop!
The rally is one of many events being organized across the country during National Medicare Week 2009 (November 16-20). Representatives from communities throughout the Vancouver Island Health Authority will be making their voices heard.
TAKE ACTION!
Come out and lend your support! Demand that the provincial government invest in public health care and promote public positive solutions to our health care challenges! Buses will be leaving from Campbell River and Port Alberni and all stops along the way.
Call 604-681-7945 for more information or to find out how to reserve a bus seat.

| National Medicare Week Contest - tell us what Medicare means to you! |

With a publicly funded and accountable health care system we all get the care we need and no one goes broke paying for essential health care. These are the facts - but it's also important to know the stories behind them and what it means for individuals.
Tell us in 20 words or less why Medicare matters to you. Winning entries will receive a beautiful super strong, double ribbed 48" red umbrella custom made by the Umbrella Shop in Vancouver - a symbol of how, under Medicare, we are all covered.

| Help us build a province-wide network of Seniors Organizations! |
| |
Do you know an organization working on seniors' health issues in your community? The BC Health Coalition is building a network of seniors' health and advocacy organizations across B.C in order to better share information, resources and to organize!
The latest wave of government cut-backs and privatization has had a dramatic impact on seniors' health care services. The B.C. government continues to close public residential care facilities, forcing seniors into high-cost private facilities, while cutting programs that allow seniors who live at home, to remain active and stay healthy. This means increased pressures on our emergency rooms and a decrease in seniors' quality of life.

Decision Time: Will the BC Health Coalition have its day in court?
|
| |
A group of private for-profit clinic owners led by Dr. Brian Day are suing the provincial government and aiming to strike down public health care legislation in the courts. Their goal is to open B.C.'s doors to US-style medical insurance corporations and private insurance.
The BCHC and other Medicare defenders have applied for standing in this case. On November 17 the BC Supreme Court will decide if we have permission to participate.
