Farewell Am!
Next month the BC Health Coalition bids farewell to our Campaign Coordinator Am Johal. Am worked closely with our Continuum of Care working group to help launch the BCHC's 2009 Seniors' Campaign, and his intelligence and warmth will be missed by all. Am will begin full-time work in a constituency office and is looking forward to his continued engagement with public health care issues. Best of luck Am!

CCPA releases three reports on seniors' care

The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives has just published three excellent resources on seniors' care in B.C.

Towards An Enhanced and More Accessible Home Support System for BC's Seniors lays out three policy recommendations that would strengthen and expand home support in a practical and cost-effective way. It calls for new funding for the home support system as a way to increase the quality of life of frail seniors, while achieving long-term cost savings for the health system.

An Uncertain Future for Seniors: BC's Restructuring of Home and Community Health Care 2001-2008 builds on past CCPA studies and provides detailed evidence related to concerns raised recently by the BC Auditor General, the BC Medical Association and the BC Care Providers Association about the deteriorating state of seniors' care in BC.

Innovations in Community Care: From Pilot Project to System Change highlights positive examples of what is working well in home and community care and outlines a number of local, small-scale initiatives that support people with significant health challenges to function in the community and take pressure off in-patient hospital and emergency services.

Citizens to Falcon: Public yes, for-profit no

Privatization: Pay more. Get less. The BC Health Coalition is calling on newly appointed Health Minister Kevin Falcon to listen to British Columbians' desire for a strong public health care system.

"If Falcon wants to listen to British Columbians he would do well to review the results of the government's own 'Conversation on Health'. This recent public consultation confirmed British Columbians' firm support for expanding public innovation in our health care system," says BCHC community co-chair Alice Edge.

Listening to citizens concerns also means taking a strong stand in defending provincial health legislation from a recently launched legal challenge by private for-profit clinic operators in B.C. as part of that industry's aggressive campaign to capture a larger share of the health care "market" from non-profit public hospitals.

"It is now more important than ever that the provincial government listen to British Columbian's clear desire for positive public solutions to strengthen health care," says BCHC labour co-chair Rachel Tutte. "It's time for them to protect patients from profit-driven private clinics and to take proactive steps to enforce their own rules to protect patients from out-of pocket expenses and two-tier, private insurance that undermines public health care for all of us, " she added.

Edge and Tutte both expressed their willingness to sit down with Falcon whenever he wants to hear the concerns of B.C.'s Medicare advocates and work to ensure the sustainability of an equitable and accessible public health care system for generations to come.

BCHC Seniors' Campaign sends a 5000-strong message to Premier Campbell!

No More Broken Promises!

On April 28 the BCHC mailed 5,000 letters to the Premier and Health Minister calling for immediate action on seniors' health care. The letters sent a strong message to Victoria and voiced the key demands of the Health Coalition's "Broken Promises" 2009 Seniors' Care Campaign.

The Health Coalition is asking for even more letters of support so we can send a message to the new Health Minister Kevin Falcon.

No more Broken Promises! Lend your support and Take action NOW! by keeping those letters coming to support BCHC demands!

Former CMA President Brian Day goes south to warn US citizens of dangers of "socialized medicine"

Health Care not Wealth CAre!

Dr. Brian Day, the former Canadian Medical Association President and owner-operator of Vancouver's private for-profit Cambie Surgery Centre and Specialist Referral Clinic was recently found south of the border warning US citizens of the dangers of "socialized medicine" and beating the drum for health care privatization.

On April 27, Day, a.k.a. "Doctor Profit", appeared in a television ad paid for by Conservatives for Patient Rights, an American Lobby group focused on providing a platform for the many corporations and investors who profit off the current US-style health system. The group is led by the former founder and CEO of Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp., one of the largest private health-care providers in the world.

The ad saw Day warning US citizens about government controlled health care leading to long wait lists in Canada.

Dr. Day is currently suing the BC provincial government claiming BC health legislation restricting extra-billing for publicly insured services is unconstitutional and that he should have the right to sell his services to the highest bidder.

Click here to send an e-mail to Health Services Minister Kevin Falcon demanding that he protect Medicare and put an end to the charging of user fees and extra-billing by for-profit clinics in B.C.
