| Citizens to Falcon: Public yes, for-profit no |
The BC Health Coalition is calling on newly appointed Health Minister Kevin Falcon to listen to British Columbians' desire for a strong public health care system.
"If Falcon wants to listen to British Columbians he would do well to review the results of the government's own 'Conversation on Health'. This recent public consultation confirmed British Columbians' firm support for expanding public innovation in our health care system," says BCHC community co-chair Alice Edge.
Listening to citizens concerns also means taking a strong stand in defending provincial health legislation from a recently launched legal challenge by private for-profit clinic operators in B.C. as part of that industry's aggressive campaign to capture a larger share of the health care "market" from non-profit public hospitals.
"It is now more important than ever that the provincial government listen to British Columbian's clear desire for positive public solutions to strengthen health care," says BCHC labour co-chair Rachel Tutte. "It's time for them to protect patients from profit-driven private clinics and to take proactive steps to enforce their own rules to protect patients from out-of pocket expenses and two-tier, private insurance that undermines public health care for all of us, " she added.
Edge and Tutte both expressed their willingness to sit down with Falcon whenever he wants to hear the concerns of B.C.'s Medicare advocates and work to ensure the sustainability of an equitable and accessible public health care system for generations to come.

| Former CMA President Brian Day goes south to warn US citizens of dangers of "socialized medicine" |
| |
 |
Dr. Brian Day, the former Canadian Medical Association President and owner-operator of Vancouver's private for-profit Cambie Surgery Centre and Specialist Referral Clinic was recently found south of the border warning US citizens of the dangers of "socialized medicine" and beating the drum for health care privatization.
On April 27, Day, a.k.a. "Doctor Profit", appeared in a television ad paid for by Conservatives for Patient Rights, an American Lobby group focused on providing a platform for the many corporations and investors who profit off the current US-style health system. The group is led by the former founder and CEO of Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp., one of the largest private health-care providers in the world.
The ad saw Day warning US citizens about government controlled health care leading to long wait lists in Canada.
Dr. Day is currently suing the BC provincial government claiming BC health legislation restricting extra-billing for publicly insured services is unconstitutional and that he should have the right to sell his services to the highest bidder.
