| | | Call on the Federal Health Minister to enforce the Canada Health Act | A ground breaking report entitled “Eroding Public Medicare: Lessons and Consequences of For-Profit Health Care Across Canada” has revealed a national explosion of private for-profit health facilities operating across the country, and which jeopardize the equality and fairness of our health care system. (Click here for a brief report backgrounder).
Researchers have found evidence suggest that 89 for-profit clinics in five provinces are in breach of the Canada Health Act’s criteria regarding universality and accessibility; by either selling medically necessary hospital or physician services to patients and selling two-tier access to care.
In B.C. alone, the report finds 29 suspected violations on the part of for-profit surgical and MRI clinics that appear to be in breach of the Canada Health Act. Yet, the Provincial government has deliberately and consciously decided not to enforce laws that protect patients from user fees charged by doctors or private for-profit clinics for services covered by public health insurance.
Our province is at the forefront of the drive by private investors to establish and entrench for-profit, investor owned surgical and diagnostic clinics in our health care system.
It's time for the Federal Government to Act!
Send a message to Federal Minister of Health Leona Aglukkaq calling on her to investigate suspected B.C. violations of the Canada Health Act documented in the "Eroding Public Medicare" report.
